USA Cycling reveals 2012 racing calendars
USA Cycling rolled out its revamped national calendars today, revealing a slimmed-down National Racing Calendar, stripped of the major criteriums, which have been assembled into a National Criterium Calendar.

In the 16th year for the NRC, men will have six and women will have eight events in a road race and stage race-only format. The series begins as usual with the Redlands Bicycle Classic in March, then moves to Arkansas for the Joe Martin Stage Race in April, Tour of the Gila in May and the women-only Liberty Classic in June.

No Tour of Lombardy for Cavendish

Mark Cavendish’s rainbow jersey will not be on show at the Tour of Lombardy on Saturday. He took the decision in conjunction not to start the season-ending classic with his HTC-Highroad team following his participation in Gran Piemonte on Thursday.

"We decided yesterday after Piemonte," directeur sportif Valerio Piva toldCyclingnews in Milan on Friday. "The idea in the beginning was to start Lombardy. Obviously, that’s not a race suited to Cavendish, so starting and then having to pull out after 50km wouldn’t a good situation, for him or for the race."

2012 Giro d'Italia route unveiled in Milan.

The 2012 Giro d'Italia route was officially unveiled in Milan on Sunday, and as anticipated, the corsa rosa will be a decidedly more human affair after criticism that its traditional spectacle arguably veered toward excess last May.

The race will get underway in Herning on May 5, and once again will conclude with an individual time trial in the centre of Milan three weeks later. While a healthy quota of set-piece mountain stages remain a staple of the Giro, the number of transfers has been cut dramatically, an early flight from the opening stages in Denmark back to Italy notwithstanding.

Great Britain is planning a bid to stage the world road race championships in the next decade, with Wales, Scotland and London the likely locations, and the likelihood of a suitably ambitious bid boosted by Mark Cavendish's victory in this year's title race in Copenhagen.

McEwen's second Franco Belge victory "unexpected"

Robbie McEwen has added a fifth victory to his season tally at the Tour de Wallonie Picarde (formerly known as Circuit Franco Belge), winning the fourth and last stage as well as the overall classification of the event on Sunday. The 39-year-old sprinter took the yellow jersey off Tom Veelers (Skil-Shimano) in the ultimate sprint in Tournai, thereby sealing his second overall victory of the race as he had previously won it in 2002.

Galimzyanov gets green with of Tour of Beijing.

Denis Galimzyanov of Katusha won the final stage of the Tour of Beijing, as Tony Martin (HTC-Columbia) took the overall win after leading the inaugural event from start to finish. Juan Jose Haedo (Saxo Bank-SunGard) and Elia Viviani (Liquigas) fininshed second and third respectively in the sprint finish near Beijing's Bird's Nest Stadium.

Great Britain tops the World Championships medal table

Mark Cavendish’s victory in elite men road race gave Britain its second world title of this year’s world championships and top spot in the final medal table. Great Britain won six medals, one more than Australia and three more than third placed France.
Great Britain also won gold in the junior women road race with Lucy Garner, while Bradley Wiggins and Elinor Barker won silver medals in the elite men time trial and the junior women time trial. Emma Pooley and Andrew Fenn completed the Great Britain medal haul with bronze medals in the women’s time trial and the under 23 men road race.

Hughes aiming for her best at London Olympics

After a strong showing in the women’s road race at the UCI World Championshios, Clara Hughes is looking forward to the London 2012 Olympics, where she is aiming to ride her “best bike race yet.” The multiple Olympic medallist spent the best part of a decade out of the sport as she focused on her speed-skating career, but she returned to the highest level this season.
A bronze medallist in the time trial and road race at the 1996 Olympic Games in Atlanta, Hughes went on to take four more Olympic medals as a speed-skater in the Winter Games, including gold in Turin in 2006.

Young Belgian joins Australian project from Cofidis

Following news this week that GreenEdge has finalised its roster for what is hoped will be the Australian project’s debut season as a ProTour team, Belgian Jens Keukeleire has been announced as the latest recruit.Keukeleire is the 19th rider to join GreenEdge and has spent the past two seasons with the Cofidis team, winning the 3-Daagse van West-Vlaanderen and the Nokere Koerse for the French squad in 2010.

At age 22, Keukeleire becomes an important asset for the fledgling outfit but even with his inclusion the average age of GreenEdge currently stands near 29 years.

Cobo celebrates his Vuelta win in Madrid

Juan Jose Cobo (Geox-TMC) was mobbed by hundreds of friends and supporters wearing horns and special 'El Bisonte' T-shirts in Madrid, and despite being crowned the winner of the 2011 Vuelta a Espana, he was struggling to understand that he had achieved.

He started the race three weeks ago in Benidorm as a domestique but emerged as Geox-TMC's best rider and went on to take the leader's red jersey by winning atop the gruelling Angliru climb. He then defended a slim 13-second lead on his home roads in the northern Cantabria region and subsequently all the way to Madrid,.

Australia announces Worlds team

Cycling Australia has released its final selections for the UCI Road World Championships in Copenhagen, with team captain Matthew Goss supported by a strong and versatile team.

In addition to Goss, Stuart O'Grady, Baden Cooke, Simon Gerrans, Mathew Hayman, Michael Rogers and Simon Clarke will all return to the national team for the elite men's road race. Debutants include Vuelta stage winner Chris Sutton and Heinrich Haussler, who will finally make his long awaited appearance in Australian colours.

The time trial will be contested by Jack Bobridge and Richie Porte, with both considered to be genuine medal chances.

The most notable omission is Mark Renshaw, though he does remain on the reserves list along with Adam Hansen. National Performance director Kevin Tabotta admitted it was one of the toughest teams he'd ever had to pick.

Boom strikes in Stoke-on-Trent

The apocalyptic weather that forced the cancellation of stage 2 yesterday seemed a million miles away today in Stoke-on-Trent as Rabobank rider Lars Boom won a stage bathed in golden sunshine and also pulled on the golden jersey of race leader. The Dutch fast man sprinted away from all the major players on the tight uphill finish, led-out by his Australian teammate Michael Matthews, giving the Netherlands team first and second on the day

Moseley mixes it up in Worlds team relay

Downhill world champion Tracy Moseley made an unusual appearance inyesterday's cross country team relay at the UCI Mountain Bike World Championships in Champery, Switzerland.

Mosely filled the role of the required female racer on Great Britain's team relay squad. She competed wtih Kenta Gallagher, Grant Ferguson and Liam Killeen.

Fatigued Kittel withdraws from Vuelta

Marcel Kittel (Skil-Shimano) has withdrawn from the remainder of the Vuelta a Espana, following Thursday's 12th stage to Pontevedra, won by Liquigas-Cannondale's Peter Sagan.

Kittel, winner of stage seven, had always planned to leave the Vuelta early according to team manager Rudi Kemna, and will now focus on his preparation for the UCI Road World Championships at the end of the month.

Cavendish confirmed for Tour of Britain.

HTC-Highroad has confirmed that Mark Cavendish will be part of its selection for the Tour of Britain, which starts in Peebles, Scotland, on September 11. The news reported by British newspaper The Telegraph ends speculation on whether Cavendish would take part in the eight-day event following his withdrawal from the Vuelta a España almost two weeks ago.

The announcement of the new RadioShack-Nissan-Trek team for the coming season came as a surprise to Leopard Trek sports director Kim Andersen, who was informed of the deal only by a Danish television station after the press release was issued.

Baden Cooke and Matt Wilson to ride for GreenEdge in 2012

The new Australia GreenEdge team has announced that Baden Cooke and Matt Wilson will join the team for 2012, rebuilding the close bond the two riders had earlier in their careers.
Cooke has been with Saxo Bank-SunGard for the last two years, while Wilson is currently riding for the Garmin-Cervelo team. They successfully raced together at Francaise des Jeux a decade ago, along with fellow Australian Bradley McGee. Cooke won the green jersey at the 2003 Tour de France, while Wilson was Australian national champion in 2004.

In the past, Tim Johnson has moonlighted as a professional road racer during the spring and summer months. But this year – his first as a full-time cyclo-cross-only racer for Cannondale-cyclocrossworld.com – the American has had a less-than-conventional off-season, taking on epic rides both on and off road, using his cyclo-cross bike and Flash 29er hardtail mountain bike.

Trek World Racing celebrates the perfect season

With the perfect ending to an amazing season for Trek world racing in Val Di Sole, Italy, this weekend, Tracy Moseley clinched the World Cup title and Aaron Gwin  became the only man in history to win five downhill World Cups in one season.

It was also the first time in the history of the World Cup that a team won both the men's and women's World Cup overalls in downhill. To top it off, Trek World Racing ended up the number one ranked team.

The conditions for the World Cup finals on Sunday were difficult. The heat had dried out the steep course and holes were filling with fine powder. The lack of let up in the track made for a challenging final quarter of racing as riders 

became fatigued with arm pump, and the race was rife with spectacular crashes and saves.

Hincapie triumphs in Aspen

George Hincapie (BMC) hasn't won a race since his 2009 US professional road championship, but the 38-year-old American picked quite a day to return to the top step of the podium with his victory in stage 2 of the USA Pro Cycling Challenge in Aspen, Colorado. The three-time American champion out-sprinted his five breakaway companions to triumph in the event's 209.8km queen stage.

Van Garderen prepared to defend yellow in Colorado

Tejay Van Garderen and his HTC Highboard teammates will have their hands full defending the yellow jersey during the final four stages at the USA Pro Cycling Challenge. The young American is leading the general classification heading into the stage three time trial held in Vail and he is confident in his ability to win the 16km uphill event.
